Sail and Power Squadron
The Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron (ASPS) is Atlanta’s Boating Club. With activities focused on boating that is safe, smart and fun, ASPS members have access to some of the best resources available to recreational boaters. Whether you own a sail boat, a houseboat, a cruiser, a fishing boat, a ski boat, a pontoon boat or a personal watercraft, ASPS can enhance your boating experience.
ASPS offers free vessel safety inspections, introductory boating safety courses and an extensive curriculum of boating education courses. In addition, ASPS members hold monthly raft-ups and other on-the-water events on Lake Lanier and annual cruises on major waterways. Finally, an active social calendar rounds out the activities available for having fun sharing times with others who love to boat.
Chartered in February, 1954, ASPS is a unit of the
United States Power Squadrons and is one of 450 local squadrons across the U.S.
Boating that is Safe!
ASPS members know that safety comes first on the water. Certain ASPS members are certified to perform Coast Guard–authorized vessel safety inspections. ASPS Vessel Safety Inspectors are trained to ensure that all legally required and Coast Guard-recommended safety equipment is on board, accessible and functional, and that the boat’s mechanical systems operate in a safe manner. These inspections are performed free of charge at the request of the boat owner.
ASPS offers basic boating safety courses to the public. These courses, approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), provide the basics in safe boating operation. The courses are offered in a variety of formats and locations throughout the year.
In conjunction with the Coast Guard Auxiliary and TowBoatUS, ASPS has a key role in ensuring that the annual Lake Lanier Parade of Lights is a safe and well-managed event.

and there is no age limit for participants. USPS
squadrons have offered these courses for over half a
century and have educated more than 3 million boaters to

course meets the educational requirements for boat
operation in all states and is a requirement for
squadron membership.
Boating that is Smart!
ASPS members believe that knowing your boat and how to operate and maintain it is the key to a good boating experience. To this end, ASPS offers the most extensive curriculum of boating courses available in the area. The curriculum includes Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation, Navigation, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electronics, Sail, and Cruise Planning. Available only to ASPS members, these courses typically are offered in ten to fifteen two-hour sessions on Monday evenings in the Fall and Winter. They are taught by experienced and certified instructors.
In addition to these courses, ASPS also offers several seminars on boating-related topics. These seminars, available to the public, provide a good introduction and overview of the subject and include useful resource material. Each seminar is two to three hours in duration.
Boating that is Fun!
ASPS members believe that boaters should be on the water enjoying their boats with their families and friends. The Squadron holds monthly on-the-water events on Lake Lanier April through November. These events are usually raft-ups with a theme. ASPS also sponsors an annual week-long cruise on the Intracoastal Waterway in the Spring, and a three or four-day cruise on the Tennessee River or another major waterway in the Fall.
An active land-based social calendar adds to the fun of membership. Monthly meetings include a chance to enjoy food and drink with fellow members and hear speakers addressing topics of interest to local boaters. The annual Chili and Crockpot Cookoff is a popular event each Fall, and the Seafarer’s Ball caps the year with a festive holiday celebration.
